Biennial or short-lived perennial; 1-3 feet. Leaves lance shaped to oblong, bristly-hairy. Flowers yellow, daisylike, with 8-21 rays around a deep brown center; June-October.

Where found: Moist, rich thickets.
Uses: American Indians used root tea (with Blue Cohosh) for indigestion. Flower poultice (with Blue Giant or Anise-Hyssop and a Goldenrod species) applied to burns. Cooked spring greens were eaten for "good health". Was once sold as a balsamic diuretic and tonic, recommended for urinary catarrh.
