    Common lawn weed. Notice flower parts in 5's. Although it looks like 10 seperate petals, each pair is actually connected at the base. A member of the family Caryophyllaceae (Pink), it contains some saponins and is kin to soapwort (saponaria).

    many members of the pink family have petals that are split on the end, this split goes almost all the way to the base of the petal. leaves are simple and opposite. this is a low-growing / spreading plant

    the whole plant is edible as a potherb or salad green. (Peterson, Elpel) it has diuretic, laxative, demulcent and mild anti-inflamatory properties. plant poultice can be used to treat minor burns and itchy or dry skin. as mentioned above, the plant contains saponins and can be used to make soapy solution for washing (Elpel) tea used to treat cough skin diseases and itch (Peterson)
