    The odd flowers resemble spotted bluecurls, without the curled stamens. The single petal is 5-lobed with a hood above and two "platforms" below, often spotted. Leaves are opposite on square stems, often tinged with red or purple along the coarsely round-toothed edges of the kidney shaped leaves.

    Whole plant is edible as salad or potherb (Elpel). Because of it's tannin content, cooking is recommended. The plant also contains mucilage and many flavonoids. Used as an astringent (tannins) and expectorant for cough (mucilage). (Elpel)
